Five years ago I opened a national franchise bakery, not knowing much about the baking world. I had been a lawyer sitting behind a desk for most of my adult career. Running a bakery is not easy, and running a cottage bakery all by yourself? I can only imagine the stressors.

The tools available to me didn't meet my needs. They were either giant spreadsheets or point-of-sale systems built for coffee shops, and it was still so hard to plan out a week's worth of baking and keep ingredient inventory at the right levels. There's a fine line between having enough stock and losing perishable product to expiration dates.

And the price tags made it worse. The good tools out there are built for businesses that can shrug off $50 or $100 a month for software. Even the ones that started out serving small makers seem to grow up, chase bigger customers, and leave the little guy behind. I get it, that's where the money is. But it means the person doing every job herself, the one who needs the most help, is exactly the one the software world ignores.

So I started building a system to help me spend less time on the administration of the bake plan and the management of inventory, and more time with my kids. Along the way I've met so many cottage bakers, and some have even worked for me. I learned that my struggles were their struggles too. And I thought: it's high time somebody paid attention to them in a way that makes life easier, so they can spend more time doing what they love and keep a healthy balance of purpose and pleasure.
